Victoria House Environmental Policy

At Victoria House, we recognise we have a responsibility to respect the environment and will strive to achieve environmental best practice throughout our business activities.

As part of this commitment we are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and the Shropshire Hills Sustainable Business Scheme.

We believe that everyone - government, businesses and the community at large - has a duty of care to the environment and we must all seek ways to conserve natural resources.

At Victoria House we will;

  • comply with all relevant legislation concerning the environment and will actively co-operate with the authorities on environmental protection matters
  • seek to minimise the wastage of raw materials and energy and harmful emissions resulting from our activities
  • inform our suppliers and contractors of our environmental policy and monitor their performance to ensure that the goods and services they provide meet our environmental objectives
  • provide walkers and cyclists with extensive information on low-impact activities and encourage our visitors to follow the Sustainable Tourism Visitor code

 We make a commitment, wherever possible, to;

  • support ethical, fair trade and other socially responsible practices
  • supply environmentally-friendly washing products and cleaning materials for guest use
  • use environmentally-friendly washing and cleaning products in our own cleaning routine
  • minimise use of hazardous and toxic substances
  • monitor use of water, gas and electricity and implement plans to reduce their use
  • recycle all cardboard, paper, glass, plastic and metals and compost all green kitchen waste
  • use low-energy light bulbs throughout the house
  • encourage beneficial insects in the garden
  • take surplus items to local charity shops for reuse or resale
  • replace obsolete appliances with AAA-rated appliances and dispose of them responsibly
  • furnish the house with pre-loved items

To encourage awareness of the environmental sensitivity of the natural environment we have an extensive range of information produced by local groups and promote local tourist attractions and events.

Our customers and guests will be made aware of our initiatives and we will encourage them to help us achieve our environmental goals by asking them to;

  • support local producers, pubs, restaurants and cafes
  • separate their recycling from general rubbish
  • leave hazardous waste, such as batteries, with us for safe disposal
  • reuse their towels

Our employees will be provided with the information, instruction and training necessary to fulfill the requirements of the policy and we will regularly assess our progress towards improved environmental performance.
